“It’s come to light this week that animals being transported via boat from Australia to Indonesia, are subject to inhumane treatment. Now, meanwhile we’ve quite literally got boats coming past the other direction and the people on board we can only really describe their situation as inhumane as well. Now, in the view of the panel, which story is more likely to generate compassion from the wider Australian public?”—Matt Graham, Q&A, Monday May 30 2011.
“What we have at the moment in Australia is a decomposition of both major political parties. Both major political parties have decomposed to the point where they’re narrow professional outfits. They are entirely run by people who join usually at university, usually on the first day of university, usually because nobody else will have them in their clubs and 20 years later they’re, you know, the Minister for Water Supply. They’re the most personally inadequate person, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. People look at that and despair. What these groups have become have become too narrow casts which have more in common with each other as professional politicians than they have with their own with social class base or the wider population at large. The only party with anything resembling some sort of life, some sort of liveliness, some sort of sense of a mission and a purpose is the Greens and you can see that. You can see that in terms of the respect that someone line Bob Brown gets from people who disagree with him. People look on the Liberal Party and the National Party and the Labor Party at the moment with something approaching despair.”— Guy Rundle, Q&A, Monday 30 May, 2011.
I was talking to my brother about the Australian housing market bubble a couple months ago, and he expressed his skepticism that inner city house prices would slide. Well, here we are, and this just demonstrates that you can indeed, “write a history … in reverse by assembling the solemn pronouncements … about what could not be done and could never happen.”, as Robert Heinlein claimed.
“Yeah, I heard a funny thing
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear”—Love - Alone Again Or (the Calexico cover is good and you should probably listen to it)
